This young adult novel features a wrap-around illustration of the title character, Apple Starkington, wearing her mother’s gold locket. Representation is important, and author Dawn Quigley wanted young Native Americans to see a character on this cover that they could identify with. To achieve this, Apple’s features were based on Ojibwe teens from the author’s community.
The background is set in the Turtle Mountain reservation in North Dakota—complete with wild prairie roses and sage brush.
